It's part of the ignition system, and if it has gone bad, your car will not likely start. It's a white ceramic block, maybe 3" long with two wiring connectors, mounted on the firewall, near the driver's side hood hinge. I haven't bought one in years, but I recall they're relatively inexpensive. I'm sure there are a number of other things that could go wrong that are less likely given that you have recently run the car (bad coil, coil-to-distributor cap wire broken, points not opening or misadjusted, spark timing off, a bad ground someplace, etc.) but I for a start>>no start situation, I would think this is most likely. To the other listserver members - other ideas? Happy Holidays to All & Rapid Recovery Wishes to Wayne Graefen, John Spiers Iamonesurfer@xxxxxxx wrote: Hello friends: First of all, Happy Holidays. Also, to Wayne Graefen, I wish you speedy recovery and hope that you have lots of energy and keep up your enthusiasm. Now, I need help: I have a 300J which I just purchased. The car was delivered and it started right up. I drove it three times since, and the third time it took a while to start and I pumped the pedal a few times. It was about 55 degrees out there. I tried to start it two days ago, and it was impossible. I changed the spark plugs (they were black), but it did not do anything. My friend came by and he cleaned the points and pulled the gas tubes going from the fuel filter to the carbs and he did a little cleaning. He said the fuel pump worked well and the filter was clean and unclogged. We poured fuel in both carbs, and after a few attempts a lots of gas, the car started. We sprayed cleaned the carbs. That day I started it a couple of times. The battery is brand new. Today.... surprise! It does not want to start! Pump the gas, crank it, pull the choke, try all those things, and nothing. What could be the problem? I am a bit confused. Help, help, help. Any hints or ideas you folks could give me I would really appreciate them (you can tell I my knowledge about mechanics needs improvement). I am open to any advise I can get. Thank you all in advance!! I located SMS in Portland and they provided me with the correct basket weave vinyl and embossed the vertical lines in it to match existing. I was impressed. I also bought some wind lace , a little larger than stock, and white pearlesant vinyl. The costs seemed fair and the service was very good. My only problem was finding an upholstery technician to install the insert properly. It could have turned out a lot better. I can't remember if I had to pay up front. That was six or so years ago.
