I thought I was pretty good mechanically, and have restored many cars, but never a 57. How do I remove the A/C unit from the firewall inside the engine compartment? There is one sentence in the manual that means nothing to me, "From inside the passenger compartment, remove the hydraulic actuator piston, bracket and operating linkage. I think I know what that (they) are, but can't see how they are attached unless it's via crazy glue at the factory. I thought it would be easier to see if I removed the heater control bezel and radio+radio and ash tray bezel, but I can't seem to locate the hidden spot welds that seem to have that affixed to the dash. I really like the car and am attempting a 'body-off' resto, so there's no engine in my way on the firewall side, and no front seat in my way in the body of the car, so it "couldn't" be any easier, but I'm stumped. I'd like to do this without chain saws and torches, since I plan to drive the car someday, but the frustration level is pretty high. Any help would be appreciated (or maybe a pint of Jack Daniels). Thanks, John ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2003 14:55:53 -0600 From: Ray Jones <hurst300@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: Re: Spring 2003 Meet >From the Meet Coordinator, The latest: Host Hotel is Battle Creek Inn, phone # 1-800-232-3405. DeBusk" <cfdebusk@xxxxxx> Subject: jet hot I just got a powder coat finish from Forrest Products in Oregon. It's a coating that's supposed to be good to 1200 degrees. It's available in a couple of grays, flat black, and forest green(?). They're on the web. It's the only supplier of high-temp powder coatings I've found. It's a bit pricey, but they will sell 5 lbs, which will last a long time. I put the powder on a set of manifolds going on my '68 Fury. It went on well, and looks good. Can't say anything yet about performance and it will be a while before I get it running on the car. I believe the 58 A/C/heater unit in simular to the 57. I also had a hard time removing the unit, and the service manual is not much help. First remove all attaching hardware from the A/C heater unit from the front side of the firewall. Remove the pressure and return lines from the hydraulic actuator. Below the actuator on the inside of the firewall there should be a plate that is attached to the firewall by 4 ( I think) fasteners. After removing the fasteners it will be necessary to slowly pry the plate from the firewall as it is mounted with the factory caulking. Now remove the A/C/heater unit from the firewall side by rolling the top side forward and lifting up and out. I did not remove the actuator before removing the unit, but that may make removal easier. ----- Original Message ----- From: <john_nowosacki@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, March 14, 2003 3:22 PM Subject: [Chrysler300] Help with 57 dashboard/ a/c unit > Help!! > I thought I was pretty good mechanically, and have restored many cars, but never a 57. > How do I remove the A/C unit from the firewall inside the engine compartment? When disassembling the engine there were phenolic spacers between the carbs and the intake manifold. From pictures I have seen of other 58's, I don't see the spacers. Are the supposed to be there? Were they added by a service bulletin, or should they be left off.
