Subject: '57 front brakes always ..

Hi all,
Last week end i made a 250 miles trip with other cars to an US car show
(i was the "manager" of this meeting..). All was fine except ... brakes
! I've always this dangerous problem on the Imperial: braking let me
feel "unsafe at any speed" ....
I resume:
- When cold (i.e after 1 night): the first braking are VERY hard, the
left front wheel locks immediatly if the speed is very low (under 5
mph). And as you expect the car goes on left ! If i let my left foot
lightly on the brake during 10 s, the problem disapears (because the
lining is now warm ?) but ..
- When warm or hot, the car remains unsafe because on strong braking it
goes to the ..right. I'm always very nervous at "3 digits speed" (hey
Hugh, at 3 digits kph.: 100 or 110 kph , never more !.) The braking
remains too hard, especially at low speed and i feel that the drums are
not perfectly round. At very low speed the braking  locks again the
front wheel(s) .
Seems that the drums must be (again) turn but why the braking is too
efficient ? Seems that either i've a light braking (with light pedal
pressure) or a "lock" braking with strong pedal pressure. I know that
the power assist system could be adjust at "bellow" rod but do you think
it's the solution.
Maybe also a lining problem: too soft so too efficient ? The brake parts
are as new (2 years old )
What do you think of old "NOS" or "NORS" lining and shoes, often seen on
ebay ? How are these linings (glued..) after 20 or 30 years ?

Today in the mail I received a brochure titled "Chrysler auto show news" That
I bought on e-bay.it is an original brochure from 1960. On the fold out
center there is a picture of a dark conv. with a four speed shifter in the console.
I only knew of one f 4 speed conv. and it is white. Can anyone shed some
light on this matter. Dave

Subject: How to stop a Chrysler

I had a pleasant experience dealing with a vendor I think was recommended by
a person on this list. The help received helped us put good brakes under a
customers old Dodge. I appreciated the way the vendor approached selling us
used parts. I want list listeners to know that Moore's said that they would
do something and that they did do it and right the first time.

We needed two drums for the front of a '67 Dodge. We had looked elsewhere
and way beyond. The two Kelsey Hayes drum/hub assemblies (with good, swaged
in place left and right hand studs even) arrived machined and separately
packaged. This is their way of checking to make sure the drums will finish
below .060" over nominal which is what we specified. Had we not found these
drums I would have continued my search for a disc brake conversion set of
parts. When all the good drums are gone, converting to disc brakes is what
should be done IMHO. This type conversion I have done only once and not on a
'67 Dodge and this is not a car that I own so with good drums we fixed the
car.

The vendor for the used parts was Moore's Auto Salvage in Rapid City, SD.
They did not have parts for MY vehicle :<( but I will try them again some
day for the rear drums for the Polara.

Following the recent discussions Re: brakes I will describe some of what we
did to make the Dodge stop dead straight hands off, smooth and quiet.

The drums as received were course machined and undersized. There was plenty
of material for remachining on my lathe as this was required in preparation
for grinding as there were 'hot spots' in the drums. This condition occurs
due to heat. Carbide tools will not cut and level these ridges and a noisey,
grabby brake job will be the result.  The drum braking surface must be true
and smooth. BTW the hard spots do not go away; just smoothed.

Brake backing plates have been restored where the shoes rest. ALL hardware
was replaced (well, except the adjusters which were cleaned and lubed with
synthetic brake lube). The cylinders are new and the hoses are not original
and definately not cracked. Fluid is clean and master cylinder would have
been changed but we have records that show it NEW not too long a go. This
car is highway driven regularly so the rear cylinders are not sticking as
will happen with hydraulic parts that sit for six months at a time. This is
not a car that needs the extra detail of DOT 5 fluid. The shoes were off the
shelf Bendix relines and fit the drums just fine; nothing real special but
from our experiences good dependable state of the art performance suited for
use on this car. There have been advances in lining materials that make me
leary of using OE lining (did on a 1942 IH military truck once; took two
large gorillas to slow the thing).

Anyway, IMHO, good hydraulics, drums and brake linings assembled with new
hardware will make an old Chrysler stop just fine.

Query (1) re doing longer repro quarters, and (2) does anyone make the sill
section under the doors?

(1) With regard the repro 57 quarters, has anyone asked/investigated them
(also?) being made with the door opening returns, shaped ends, that would be
the same as factory panels.

I understand the desire to retain original spot weld marks, sheet metal
there, but my one experience of replacing rusty lower metal on a 300 C,
resulted in rust also being in this door opening area, and that the metal
was better off replaced here - the factory spot weld marks easily being able
to be replicated (if desired) by such as using a metal punch and hammer.

I understand it is possibly simpler (cheaper) to make the panels as they are
now, but Metalcrafters/ shapers would I believe be far better situated to
make the panels with the curved right angle pressing/shaping for the door
opening than me (possibly many others also?) having to shape it separately,
then weld it to theirs without error and distortion?!
I mean I could do it, but when they have gone this far, it would be
tremendous if they can now also offer the extra for those that may/will need
it/this.

I have one 300C to do rust in, and having done one already, it is a mongel
of a job to do properly, and that is the only way to do it, so any help
making this easier is a real bonus.

(2) the sill section under the doors - is there anyone over there that does
these - they taper in width at the door opening folds, front to rear, and
must be done/made properly?
If no one does, maybe can do a batch here (australia), otherwise has anyone
asked quarter makers for a price if no one does?

Take a close look at the picture and you will also see
the buttons for the auto trans in the usual spot. The
shifter is also positioned differently from the actual
4 speed cars, See the Story on Wayne Graefons car for
the correct 4 speed. I believe the car was a mock up
for photo purposes, but I could be wrong.
