Members
Have found the broadcast sheet, or most of it, for my 300L. Is there something that will tell me what the numbers mean? Thanks.

Subject: Battery Amps!

Hi everyone out there in Chryslerland!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend tooling around town in your 300!

I am curious about the battery for a 59 300E. What size battery should be in
the car? I have a 700 AMP battery which, after the car has been running a
while, seems to have sluggishness in turning the car over when you start the
engine right after it has been turned off. I am thinking maybe the battery
should have more charging amps! Any suggestions!

Happy Chryslering,

Tom

Tom,

Your 300E requires a battery size known as group 27. In the early days,
these batteries batteries put out about 450 Cold Crank Amps (CCA). Now,
most modern group 27's have the ability to put out higher CCAs, in the range
of 700 or so, as you mentioned in your email. Cold Crank Amp ratings
provide the maximum battery amperage output possible at 0 degrees F.

With The hard start conditions you describe, you are experiencing heat soak
within the engine. Once it has been shut down for a while, the internal
engine temp actually goes up for a bit before it starts to cool down.
Assuming your battery and charging system is working properly, a larger
battery and or higher output alternator will not solve your problem.

My suggestion is to examine your battery cables first, and make sure they
aren't a light gauge aftermarket type. Do they get hot when you crank the
motor? The next consideration is the starter itself. The starter was
offered with several different field windings, a small, a medium and a large
type. all fit within the same starter type.

When I was experiencing this problem with my 300G back in the '80s, I had
the starter examined by a rebuilding shop that informed me that my starter
had the light duty winding in it. The shop owner indicated that he could
replace my light duty winding with a heavy duty winding (from a Dodge Power
Wagon) and it would improve starter performance when the engine was hot.
That is what I did back in '86 and I have not had a heat soak problem since.

I believe this has been mentioned on the list in the past, and others have
provided a part number for the heavy field winding. I would seek out a
rebuilder in your area and ask him if he would rebuild your starter using
the heavy winding. The rebuilder should be able to source the winding as
well as install it. You'll be glad you did!

Hi Group

Don't know how many of you subscribe to Auto Restorer magazine. Robb Report or Automobile Quarterly it is not. It is however an excellent reference source for those of you who do your own restoration and maintenance. They accept no advertising so it is not the typical infomercial rag available on newsstands today.

Mark Souders beautiful 300H is the cover car and subject of a well written feature article. I was excited to see it because my H is an exact twin to his car.. Admittedly his is about a few years ahead of mine in the restoration department :-(

Sorry to say the magazine is by subscription only. Those of you who do not subscribe might get a single issue at their web address:

Safely home from the Land of the Agnew and Grigg and I'm reporting that
should you take a vacation to the Land Down Under the Land Down Under, bring a tee
shirt that says: American Mopar Collector Inspector and you will not have to
buy a single meal or drink in your stay. Like our Swedish brothers, there are
some SERIOUS Moparheads in New Zealand and they really really really like
those cars. I'll share some stories at parking lot confabs in future meets but
Sandy and I will, like MacArthur, return. Wonderful people, wonderful land and
Dave Agnew should be their Prime Minister!!

Should anybody want stuff from a 66 Chrysler NY'r coupe which includes the
front disc brakes in working condition, give me a few weeks to continue
purloining the bits, including the 440 and torqueflight plus the air conditioning, to
make a Town and Country street rod from a 48 Windsor coupe foisted upon me,
and it is yours, FREE, for the taking. Not too keen on removing and shipping
of these brakes , just want the car gone so email me privately and lets make a
deal..You take, I give.

Your humble editor will be attending the journalists'
first drive of the new Chrysler 300/300C. If you have
any questions about the car, please email them to me
privately - asap. I will choose from club members'
questions to incorporate into my review of the car for
the Club News.

Please refrain from asking anything about tailfins or
lack thereof...

Hi All,

I currently have received four short stories with
photo(s) for the Hurst feature issue. Thanks to those
who have contributed.

Most model year feature issues have been running 40
pages with 7 to 10 feature stories - one or two of
those being more than 1 page in length.

If you are planning to contribute to the Hurst
feature, or have considered it, the deadline is
Wednesday. I can use your help. Please include a
photo.

PLEASE: if you plan to send email attachments larger
than 1MB, contact me first and I'll give you another
address to send them to.

Thanks,
Andy Mikonis
editor, Chrysler 300 Club News
