Hi Mike, To answer your transmission question first, 56-61 torqueflites did not have a "park" position, when in neutral they will still roll. The emergency brake is what keeps it from rolling. The brake is a drum on the back of the transmission with small brake shoes inside. The horn wire that goes down the center of the steering column, connects to a brass ring. This makes contact with a switch on the outside of the column. The switch also has the directional canceling switch. The horn wire is black. The quick fix would be to just un-plug the wire at the connector. The steering column would need to be taken apart to get at the wire. I would check the horn contact switch under the steering wheel cover first. The exhaust elbows are not that hard to replace, the problem is that the bolts tend to freeze in the manifolds and break when you try and remove them. I would start soaking them (cold) with a penetrating oil like PB blaster when you put it in winter storage, and keep them wet every couple of weeks. By spring they may come right out. Gaskets are available from Bob Merritt in the club news. To replace the PS shaft seal, the pulley must be removed first with a special puller. The reservoir must also be removed from the pump so the pulley can be pressed back on. The o-ring should also be replaced at this time. When you try to start the car and it is dead, will the headlights come on? If not, you have a large drain somewhere. Disconnect the negative cable to the battery, and connect a test light between the post and the cable. If it lights, there is a drain. Make sure the doors are shut, and all accessories are off. If the headlights do come on, try shifting from neutral to 1st and back to neutral. The neutral switch may be sticking. This will be the brown wire coming up from the drivers side of the transmission. If it still won't turn over, try grounding this wire. That will probably do the trick. 300ly, Don Verity Rhode Island ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Reed <mrreed@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, October 22, 2004 12:37 PM Subject: [Chrysler300] Need A Couple of Answers Although I've owned my 300F for nearly 26 years, it has been in a museum for the last 21 years. I need to fix a few things, etc. At the moment, I have the following questions I hope someone can help me with; -- Where does the horn wire exit the steering column? (have a bare spot on it apparently, as the horn blows when turning the steering wheels frequently). -- How difficult is to replace the casting that's between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold heat chamber under the carb? -- How difficult is to replace the power steering pump shaft seal? -- (this seems like a silly question, but... I don't know the answer -- only Chrysler product I've ever owned) When the transmission is in neutral, is it a "park" mode? I.E. does it prevent the car from rolling? It doesn't seem to...
