300-G Tachometer question

Hi.
What is the tach on a 300-G suppose to read when the engine is idling 
mine reads between the 0 and 1000 r.p.m. mark but when i race the motor a 
little bit it goes up but it doesnt go up to the 6000 r.p.m. mark that 
easily is this normal cause i didnt rev the engine to hard anyways thank you
