Regarding your heating problem - I seem to remember reading a similar 
problem with a letter car (don't remember the year), in Europe,
which turned out to be an air cavitation problem, (dead air space 
between radiator and fan) caused by the fan (too many blades??)
at high RPM. Do not recall what was done to eliminate this cavitation 
(removed the shroud or went to a 4 blade fan).

I would try a 160 degree thermostat or no thermostat during the drive 
there (reinstall the thermostat after you get to Phoenix)-
always worked for me, over the years, on cars I owned that developed 
heating problems - especially on the road.
