Frank and all concerned: I believe that the tapered axle/hub unit that we are talking about uses thrust washers to correctly space the axle assy when reassembling. When I got my '62 300, someone had obviously tried to remove the brake drums with just such a whacking force. The result was that both axles had about 1/8 free play in and out and had to be removed and properly re-shimmed. I am definitely not an expert on this and had my mechanic fix it. Just a caution. HAS THIS BEEN DONE?? JEFF tucson az.
