hi Jennie, The trick is to remove all the buttons; then, using a long needlenose set of pliers, compress the metal "fingers" that fit into the buttons, moving them closer together to each other and closing the gap ever so slightly, until the buttons stay on there, and no longer pop out. You should be able to pull, outwards, on each button and not have it come off, when it's inserted into its matching set of metal "fingers" at the trans. shifter mechanism. 300'ly and all that good stuff.
