its probable that the damage the overload lights did and the overamp alt. did, are one and the same, namely, burnt the amp gague and or the connections for it to the system, ive had that and ive got a really good and fairly easy fix that ive used ever since the first burnout of that type when i first used a 100 amp alt. back in 75 or so.. ive used the 100 amp unit on EVERYTHING ever since. battery problems all but disappeared with it. take a heavy, from 2 to 6 gague wire and run from batt post on alt. to a h/d ''ford starter relay '' type of cont. duty hi amp relay that is normally closed, and from there directly to the battery pos post. to actuate the relay [open the shunt youve just installed] so you can see just what the alt is doing, run the control wiring to a small switch, somewhere easy to get at so you can flip it anytime you get suspicious of the alt output. if you flip it and the alt needle pegs out . immediately turn it off, the alt is putting out too much, for the gague just now if it goes to charge peg, if to discharge peg, system may have a short,, or more probably its overloaded by lights, amplifiers or some such, only have to start shutting stuff down and recheck to find the load, it may just be normal now..
