Just guessing it might be the same as the later switches. If so, you'll find 
a button on the switch itself that releases the knob along with the spindle. 
Gain access to the back of the dash and locate the button, push it in hard 
while you pull out on the knob. Sometimes you have to pull hard to release 
it. Hope this helps.
