RE: [Chrysler300] 413 engine & trans

Ok here we go. Anything can be made to work if you are willing to spend
enough effort and$$. I thought the deal was to used this motorhome trans
to replace a cast iron trans. If you are gonna use a later 62-up engine
it will bolt up. But then you have shifter issues and driveshaft issues.
If you can get a swap kit to use the pushbutton shifter then that's ok,
but from what I remember the big truck and motorhome trans is shorter
and does not have a slip yoke. It uses a standard big u-joint yoke with
no slip. The driveshaft has a separate mid slip joint with splines to
handle that. So now you have to use a similar truck type multi piece
shaft to make this work, and since your old shaft is too short you will
have to start with a new shaft tube or use part of the truck shaft or
whatever. There are better solutions. Use a 65 trans, pushbutton
compatible, slip yoke tailshaft and they were installed in EVERY 1965
chrysler product with a big block engine. If you have a 60 or 61 car,
you can still use this trans if you change the engines crankshaft to a
newer 440 part. Then all will work fine, you will just have to deal with
no E brake, or fit a newer axle from a 66-68 C body with e brakes in it.

Chrysler was the king of interchangeability. Any big block engine and
trans from a newer car can be swapped into these fin cars easily all the
way back to 57. No kits needed, just bits from other model Chrysler
imperials for the pre-60 cars. Some e-brake mods and shaft fixes and you
are off to the races.

Hi Lee,

Allow me to pay Devil's Advocate here.
1/ Why would the trans not "work" (bolt up) to a 62 and later crank ?
2/ There is a company that makes a conversion kit for the later
Toqueflites
to pushbutton operation
3/ Shorten driveshaft

Many, many years ago I obtained a '60 Saratoga 2 door hardtop rolling
car
w/ no drivetrain in it save for the rear. I also obtained a 70? 71?
Newport
car... had a 400, 727.... I had very little money at the time and
nothing
better to do so I transplanted the Newport drivetrain into the Saratoga.
It
was just about a no-brainer ! The engine and trans fit in with NO
WELDING
and NO MODIFICATIONS ! the '71 Newport drivetrain fit like a glove -
even
the Y-pipe, and the driveshaft fit in with no alterations needed. All I

needed to do was figure out a shifter for the trans, and that was about
it !

So I really think that the motor home trans MAY work providing one used
a
post '61 engine . One may have to shorten a driveshaft...and play wiht
the
crossmember... if I had such a trans here I'd love to try it ! Much
superior setup, probably has heavy duty everything and part-throttle
kickdown.
