Hi Ray, I've heard you talk about your 409 numerous times and must say that the '61 Chevy is probably my favorite from a styling exercise of any Chevy ever built. Personally I've always wanted a "bubble top" example. I know the 409's in those cars were very far and few between and I've also heard they had lots of problems. What came out in '62 was a much better bottom end for that engine and they did live. Side note: When I was a 16 my best buddy who was 17 bought a used SS 409 Impala in Honduras Maroon. It was one of 40 built with an aluminum front end and a fiber glass hood scoop. It was the 409/409 dual quad version. That car with the four speed would smoke street tires for a city block. I know cause I did it more than once. I think the 61's only had a single carb. One of the few cars he couldn't beat in a drag was a fellow class mate who drove a'63 Stingray with a 327. It was the highest HP optioned car for that year of Vettes. I drove the car numerous times and had lots of fun in it. One Friday night my buddy and I had traded cars for the weekend. He had my '63 VW with a Judson Supercharger. That night I was on the way home from one of the famous burger joints (Harvey's Broiler) on Firestone Blvd. in Downey when I blew the ring and pinion out of the thing. It was a very long night and when my Dad found out he was not a happy camper. Not to long after that the car was involved in a head on crash with a Caddy. It was put back together with a regular front end and sold off. I've often wondered where it ended up. In 1962 we were Drag Racing our 1961 Chebbi SS 409 4-speed convertible. One of my Strip slips was against a 300 H which I beat by a bunch. The only thing that could beat me was another 409, a coupe 200 #'s lighter. This was at US 30 Drag-away in York, PA. This was an Airport which was active. The Air charts showed it closed on weekends, except for emergencies. We sometimes had to wait while a plane landed. Grumpy Jenkins was the tech inspector then. So you can throw the 409's into the mix. They were not popular, everyone liked the 327's, but were much more like the Hemi's with huge amounts of low-end torque. I had to replace the 409 with a Corvette 327 to sell the car. Turns out later it was one of 7 built! If I only had it now................... This was our Family car with 3 kids riding in the back. A former "Factory built for drag car", I got a Certificate of Origin when we bought it, as we were the first to title it.
