When any aluminum part is stripped of its original anodizing, the process will unfortunately also open up any imperfections in the original casting or extrusion and will further reveal problems caused by road debris that have hit the grille over the decades.  In chrome plating, the "acid copper" process can be employed to fill these pits or imperfections.  Unfortunately there is no similar answer that I am aware of for aluminum anodizing.

The C / D grille can be disassembled by undoing the dimpling at the junctions of the grille.  These are after all just straight extrusions with cross-cuts made to allow them to be fitted together.  Then some re-dimpling will hold it together.  Ideally one would make a rack fixture to hold all the bars during anodizing so as to eliminate any problems in plating.

This is NOT a simple grille to correctly restore.  And that is why so very many of them have been spray painted, sometimes with good result.
