[Chrysler300] 1957 chrysler torqueflite

I have a fluid leak where the manual shift cable enters the transmission. I need to replace the o ring. The Chrysler manual says to put the pushbutton in low, remove the plug, and insert a screw driver to release the spring lock and pull out the cable. I can't determine what I'm supposed to do with the screwdriver and can't see in the hole. Does the screwdriver have to push or lift? What should I feel on inside of the trans with the screwdriver? Anybody have a better method? Vince
