Well, I tried a driveway test. Let the car idle until something would happen. I watched the gage, and it went up to Hot pretty quickly - faster than just engine temperature would do. It came down pretty fast, too, back to normal range. I looked under the hood and everything was normal. So, I guess it's just a quirky gage or sending unit. Thanks for all your help and advice.
