Re: [Chrysler300] Fw: 61 motor rebuild

Hi David and All:
Value or "devalue" is kind of subjective here. I can't see any way
rebuilding and restoring authentically the engine and engine compartment would
devalue a car from a purely monetary standpoint. However, to those of us who are
trying to authentically restore a car which has already been messed with, an
original untouched engine compartment to look at is essentially priceless. It
is only original once. My '64 Riviera is that way--even to the sparkplug
wires with the 1964 date on them. However, its engine compartment appearance
is not up to its exterior or interior appearance standards. I am sure there
are many other Rivs with better original engines than mine (they made 40,000
of the things!) yet I hesitate to touch it.
With your 300G, the engine compartment is one of the high points of the car
(as opposed to the Riv) and one would certainly like to be able to proudly
raise the hood at car shows/cruises. If it were mine, I think I would document
the living "dickens" (photos and videos) out of it so that others could
benefit from it with their restos, then AUTHENTICALLY restore it.
My 2 cents (or is it 5 by now?) worth.
300ly, Gil Cunningham

Subject: 61 motor rebuild

Question for group, I have a decent running G with 112,000 thousand
miles. the motor smokes some, not a lot but noticable, leaks a little of
everything
and of course looks fairly shabby. the rest of the car looks fine.
Was going to pull the motor and rebuild it, hardened seats, new gakets,
timing chain, ect. ect., paint and reinstall. I have gotten some flack
about this from different sources saying that doing this to an original
motor will detract from "authenticity" and devalue the car. Any truth to
this??
I await the advice from the sages.
Thanks
In a fog of smoke
