Re: [Chrysler300] 61 motor rebuild

David,

I can't speak to the possible lack of originality. I can say that in
my experience, most MOPAR big blocks that run well but leave a little
smoke either at start up or on deceleration need nothing more than
replacement valve seals. The old umbrella seals tend to get hard and
crack or wallow out and loosen around the valve stem. Smoke on
acceleration is probably oil ring seal.

Both replacing valve seals and sealing external engine leaks can all
be done in the engine bay without removing the engine. Painting the
main pieces of valve covers, water pump cover and intake manifold can
also be done during the resealing process. Of course removing the
engine makes it easier, if you have the wherewithal and the urge to
do so. If you do remove the engine, do not forget to replace all
"freeze" plugs or "Welch" plugs or whatever we are calling them
today, including the two between the engine and transmission.
