Hi Sean and All: I would guess the removal of the wedges was probably a cost saving in a bad sales year. I am sure as the 1958 model year "progressed" all manner of product cost reductions were explored. Having worked at the ole Corporation thru a few dismal times myself, I am well aware of cost reduction efforts. Evidently the engineers (God love 'em) drew the line with convertibles, though, as the wedges stayed on them for years. 300ly, Gil C. I have notice that some Earlier '58 cars still have the Door Jamb locating spring wedge below striker on the B pillar, like all 57's. Whilst later '58 cars had this deleted and no provision for this spring wedge at all in the pillar, Also, the door end which had a plastic locating wedge screwed on it in '57, has this omitted also on later '58 cars with just two concave pips as drill guides, but no holes. Does anyone know when this change occurred, and why? I figure perhaps this mechanism was causing problems, say with the poor panel fit and door unlatching function. Just an interesting design change. In fact, I have observed many many changes between '57 & 58 cars that make what many people regard as similar cars, very very different from a tooling perspective.
