AS-1, AS-2, etc. are indeed glass standards. "American Standards - First Quality", etc. is the interpretation in the glass catalogs. You will note on shaded windshields that the standard marking has a line above it. This is to indicate that up in the shaded area it does not meet that standard for clarity. Side glass did not need to be as perfect so was slightly inexpensively produced as AS-2. First number following may be the production plant where the glass was made. The last two numbers standards are date code for month and year. In 1957 I find that virtually all original glass carries date codes within six months of the production date of the car itself.
