Think I've seen two Fs with the aluminum unpainted fresh air intake on the cowl.  Richard Carpenter's F was one of them.    
Actually, are the painted ones aluminum or stamped tin?  Someone take a magnet to their car.
I think they are a production aberration and should be retained during restoration.  Some day we may learn the reason why some cars got them and most did not.
