Just guessing from afar, but with late 50s - early 60s hot rodders - it was sometimes a pretty common thing to simply dress up a car a bit above others - by chroming the wiper/cowl vent panel - so maybe Chrysler offered two options - standard 300F one was painted same body color, or if you wanted it a bit more dressy/flash, then you( or a Dealer?) could order one that looked chrome/sporty, but it was actually alloy ??! (If they were chrome, one may suspect owners did it or maybe Dealer, but in alloy, this had to be factory, and deliberate ?!) If price list shows alloy item, my guess is it would have been dearer/extra cost/price. Anyone have a price list ? (And if it not a big seller, that maybe why it only a one year option?) Pontiac's early 60s GTO was supposedly born/influenced by what people were doing to or with their cars - Chrysler likewise would have been aware of what people did to make their cars a bit fancyier/sporty etc? Exner, GM's Harley Earl - famous stlyists - all watched what others did, tried. I have no idea why, but a few cars utilize an unpainted air intake grill. (All of mineare painted.) Both types are identified in the parts book, upg 23-61-0 as Panel, cowl top fresh air opening insert. PN 2165 691 is "steel" and 1909441 is "aluminum". Both are shown as released for all Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler vehicles. The 1961 parts book does not list the aluminum one, so it was a one year only venture, I guess. I only have noted a few carswith the aluminum intake, but would be interested to hear from members who have originals. Also, I suppose it is possible that the aluminum ones werepainted originally, but experienced poor adhesion.
