Well, we had a picture perfect day here on the coast of Maine. There was a nice breeze out of the sou'west. The temp'ature was just right--about 78,6, and while there were clouds in the sky every so often, there t'warn't many of 'em. There were a few summah complaints (tourists) on the roads, but they kept up pretty well, and when the went ta' gawkin' they pulled over. It was so nice that I got the L out 'ta bahn and drove it right down to Wintah Habah. That's beyond Bah Habah, and even beyond Sorrento. It's not quite as fah as Machias, wohld HQ of the Maine Blackfly Breeder Association. Gory it were pretty. Why you could look out to your right or left (dependin' which way you was goin') and you could see the mountains on Mount Desert Island--all seven of 'em. You could see sailboats and lobstah pots, and the watah was all spahkly. Herself got so excited, she went on a tourist sailboat, just 'cause she could. Down ta' Wintah Habah I met up with Johnny Banes. He's one of Carlton Schroeder's wintah finds--ya know, when Carlton had nothin' ta do in the Wisconsin wintah but look for former club members. Banes had a J--in Houston. Said it was a terrible cah. It either wouldn't go, 'cause the brakes locked up, or it wouldn't stop, 'cause they didn't. But he had one of them cloysonnnnnes (or whatever; we coastal people don't do much with the French.) And I think he had a 300 from the hub cap. Anyway, he wants somebody in the club to have these things-doesn't want 'em on e-bay. I fetched 'em today, befoah he got in his boat and went to obsehve a sailboat race. I'll bring 'em to Boothbay so you can see if the pahts and pieces are right for your letter car. (They're probably not right for anything but a J.) And Johnny may join us for a minute on Saturday. Well Friday was another nice day--not quite so nice as today, but right up theah. So I went to Boothbay. Bianca has 7 rooms still available, and she is going to have to let them out to any Tom, Dick or Harry. So, now, even if you are coming for only a couple of nights, you can now get into the Boothbay Harbor Inn. While I was down theah, I went to the Botanical Gahdens--where Herself wants to go. It's so fah in the woods, why you'd think you was almost to Canada. But it's some spectacular. And I went to the waterfront and got brochures for the tourist boats. I was informed that you can take a whale watch boat and see a whale even in September. I thought the Whales of August movie meant that you couldn't see 'em after August. (I saw one once, up close in my boat, and it had bad halitosis and BO!) You can take a tour up some small back rivers, come out at Bath, where they build Navy frigates, and then ride down the Kennebec, past the fort and out into the open water back to Boothbay Harbor. You can go on a sailboat or three, and schoon around the islands off the harbor mouth. For the road trips the other day, I've got my trusty Maine Gazeteer & Atlas, and will copy things off and highlight the routes for you to take. We'll route you over the Christmas Cove and then Pemaquid, and then Marshall Point, and if you're adventurous, Owls Head. Or, you can go west--to Popham Beach and Cape Small, and then Cundy's Habah (there's a story about Cundy's Habah that I almost remember) and then Orr's and Bailey Island--and if you get fah enough, why, you'll get to Portland the islands of Casco Bay. 'Cours if the weathah's bad--as it has been lately, well then you'll have the skinny on Freeport and the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Now I haven't mentioned lobstahs or haddock or halibut or chowdah. I believe there are places all along where you can get your fill of that. If you haven't registered with Gloria yet, now'd be a good time. Actually Gloria passed me today on Rte. 1 down by Sullivan. I knew it was Gloria, 'cause you could see that she was propped up on a couple of cushions in her Subaru Outback. And then, I knew it was Gloria too, 'cause her license plate said GLORIA. I just thought you'd want to be reminded of comin' to Maine in about three weeks. If you need directions or help--just call Bill Rust. No--all seriousness aside, call either one of us, and we'll make somethin' up that sounds helpful! See you soon. Doug Mayer I believe our business meeting will be either 8:30 Friday, or 3:30 Friday afternoon. Depends on what else is goin' on.
