Thanks to all for the quick response to my request for help for an (82-year-old) friend needing help for his H steering box problem. You folks on the server are the greatest. He now has numerous options and should be back in business 300-ing down Thunder Road soon. Below is a compilation of responses for the benefit of others up in that neck of the woods with mechanical needs. While I have your attention, does anyone have an extra sack of or a source for the little plastic shoes that fit over the steel finger on the side door window flippers for the 1955 (and others?) coupes? I was finally able to remove the flipper assembly by removing four Phillips head screws that hold the assembly to the roof edge lip. I'm going to try and fabricate some little shoes from chunks of hard plastic and epoxy them on the fingers. The original shoes have a tiny rat-tail that goes up inside a notch in the flipper finger (now, be nice!) and is held in place by a through pin. The material looks like hard nylon. C-300'ly, Rich Barber Brentwood, CA 1955 Chrysler C-300 Hi Rich, Steer n' Gear did my '56 Imperial. Someone in the club recommended them, they have a stock of NOS Chrysler parts. The resto shop praised their work. Steve Estok P.G. Fl Hi Rich, We have several good used steering gears for a '62 Chrysler in our inventory which your friend could just install and run if he wanted to go that route. The price for one of these would be $225, plus shipping/insurance. We've also had good success with Steer and Gear in Ohio for rebuilding these gears, if your friend prefers to have his gear rebuilt. We also have a couple of these steering gears which came from non-running parts cars (condition unknown) which we would sell as rebuildable core units for $125 plus shipping/insurance. Let us know if we can help, Jeff JC Auto Restoration, Inc. 20815 52nd Ave W #2 Lynnwood, WA 98036 ph: 425-672-8324 fx: 425-771-2522 www.jcauto.com jcauto@xxxxxxxxxx Rich...I e-mailed my best friend in Sandpoint Idaho...he sent me back this lead on getting the car in Hayden fixed....my friend is a retired diesel mechanic and runs a wrecking yard and tow truck service in Sandpoint which is real close to Hayden. Anyway this is just a lead as I do not personally know the mechanic he is recommending. Hope this might help out or give your friend a lead. ***Hi Rusty. I know a guy named Chris Mc Laughlin that could do that. He is a good mechanic. His number is 208-819-8855. You can get a hold of him or I could for you. Doug*** Rusty Roe in Hermiston Oregon 1957 Chrysler 300C coupe #2550 Rich, We were away for the weekend and did not get your phone message and this email until we got back late last night. Unfortunately my husband doesn't have any shop to recommend. We only moved to Moscow about 4 years ago and Richard reluctantly decided it was time to sell his '57 300C rather than transport it here -- I think he is still in mourning over doing that, even though it found a good home in Sweden. This may not be any help at all, but is the only thing I can think of to suggest: we listen to Car Talk on NPR and they frequently mention that they have a section on their web site where, if you plug in your zip code, you can get a list of mechanics in that area that have been recommended by other listeners. It might be there is someone there who has been recommended for working on older cars in the Hayden/Coeur d'Alene/Spokane area. Good luck to your friend. Barbara Wells I don't know if George McKovich and his son, who work on their own cars and have some sort of business as well have time or inclination to do this but you might try him. george@xxxxxxxxxxxx Wayne Once he gets the gear out of the car, I would recommend sending it to "Steer & Gear". They seem to have the best reputation for doing a good job on these units. They are complex enough and the settings are so critical, that only an experienced company should be relied on to do this kind of job. If it is only the lower seal that is leaking or and adjustment of the spool valve, then perhaps that could be done by an experienced mechanic, but anything more should not, in my experience. Steve Albu hello I have a steering box for your chrysler. It is 62 newport which is the same as your friends. I am located in northern utah which might be the closest to him. The price is 125 plus shipping. Let me know if i can help. Kevin in northern utah I have used Steer & Gear, 1000 Barnett Rd., Columbus, Ohio, 43227, 1-800-253-4327 for rebuilding 62 steering boxes. If you need a core, contact Murray Park at mbpark@xxxxxxxxxx No idea who to recommend as a mechanic. R Hi Rich ! As always, I have to recommend my friend in Lynwood, Wash, Jeff Carter ! He's the best as far as I know.............fast, cheap and always good stuff ! Gerald Macpherson (Seattle/Bangkok-owner of 4 letter cars) Rich. Have your friend call Mike Waller in Hayden. He owns a salvage yard and may have the unit he needs. He also may know of a mechanic that can do the job for him in that area. His cell number is: 208-659-4397 George Don't have a mechanic in that area, but here is the place that has rebuilt the power steering boxes for both of our '62's... Steer and Gear Power Steering Specialist 1000 Barnett Rd. Columbus, OH 43227 (800) 253-4327 Maybe they have a core they can ship out immediately that has already been rebuilt?
