Re: [Chrysler300] Alot to do about nothing....

Hello Pete,
You make a good point regarding the club responsibility to preserve the
marquee.
However I don't think I've questioned the club responsibility to verify the
authenticity and the right to request the club assistance, that's what the
club is all about.
Your point regarding the Mona Lisa "Everybody knows there is only one Mona
Lisa?" justify my opinion, once it’s been established that there is only one
"F Special" the debate is over, and let the buyer be aware.
That is not to say that one (Don Petty) should be deprived of either asking
any amount of money for his object (In this case the F Special) or the right
of any who wants to pay for it.

You say that a fake has never detracted from the value of a genuine article,
but that assumes that the fake is known to be a fake. Many cars are sold at
B-J and Mecum, etc., labeled as clones, or replicas, in which case the buyer
knows what he is buying. However, what happens to the value of a car that
is supposed to be "one of one" when all of a sudden another one pops up,
claiming to also be genuine, thus rendering the first car now "one of two," rather
than "one of one?" In your art world, what would happen if all of a sudden,
someone showed up with another "genuine" Mona Lisa? Would your reaction be
the same, or would you automatically discount the claim because "Everybody
knows there is only one Mona Lisa?" Well, in this case everybody knows there
was only one F Special convertible. That's the difference, and if this club
is responsible in its consideration and preservation of the marque, it
behooves it to let anyone and everyone know that the car in question is not what it
is purported to be.

I think it's alot to do about nothing.... if someone wants to spend his
money on whatever smorgasbord of a car it's his own business. A fake has

for
over 30 years and seen my share of fakes, recreations, copy's or
whatever...
the bottom line is! It's the people desire that dictates what the market
price
one will pay for any object, not the scholars or the purists.
Misrepresenting is a different legal meter all together. The Auction houses
get around it by using "euphemisms". Buyers together with their price guide

should have a dictionary handy too, its obvious that you don't need to know
English in order to have lots of money.
(Which in a way is very nice ;-)
