Re: [Chrysler300] Re: just joined and sure could use your help

Well, I hate to add to controversy, but when I was in high school, the first car I bought was a 61 Polara coupe with a 361 engine. I bought it from the original owner, and older fellow from our church who had recently quit driving. The first thing I did was take it to the local Chrysler Plymouth garage for a tune-up. They charged me for 2 sets of points, and my dad questioned it. It did indeed have a dual point setup. The service manager told my dad that it was unusual for a 361 to have it, but some do. He took?us out and popped the cap and showed us. And the original owner swore he didn't change it. To this day I believe him.

Bill and All:
First of all, welcome to the Club, Bill. Hope you find it helpful and
enjoyable.
I actually have little to add to the question of a double breaker
distributor on a 1962 Chrysler 383. Quite a bit of what I looked at was a bit
contradictory! The parts book did indicate such a distributor was available
on the Chrysler as a police option. Who knows. I'm sure it is more likely
that your original was swapped out, as Richard has suggested. FYI, the 383
distributor must go with that engine (or 361 or 350) as it is a low block
"B" engine. The 413 (and 426, 440) engines are "raised block" (RB) engines
for increased piston stroke capability.
You asked about some specs. These are from the 1962 service manual for a
dual point distributor.
    Dwell: 34 to 40 degrees
Point Gap (each set): .014" to .019"
Timing: 10 degrees BTC for all the 1962 Chrysler engines.
Hope this helps a little.

Bill,

Welcome. Sounds like someone swapped distributors somewhere along the line
and you eneded up with a better one! I assume it does not have a
mechanical tach drive provision (a place for a tach cable to screw into place).
Not
sure if there ever was a B motor with a mechanical tach option??

Anyways, the distributor might be from a later model 383HP like a Road
Runner. I'd try a cap for a '68-'70 383 Road Runner and see if it fits.
There's probably some other trick to determine but I'm in DFW right now passing

through and this is the best I can do.

Good luck,

Richard Osborne

convert. I've been reading all your commentary and it sure seems like there
is an abundance of knowledge available from all the members. I could sure
use some of that to help me get started with my 300. The car is in great
shape body, chrome and interior wise coming out of California for most of its
life
with 76,000 original miles and all the original documentation. Needs
some mechanicals which you have to expect given its age. We're pretty
sure its the original 383 with a 2 barrel but everyone seems stumped by the
fact that it has a dual point distributor. That has led to a problem finding
a replacement cap and rotor since none of the local parts stores can tie a
dual point to the 383. I would appreciate anyone shedding some light on
this. Could also use the specs for point gap, dwell angle, timing, etc.
