Re: [Chrysler300] Re: Pop goes the G - Update

Hi Richard:
It's possible that you may have a weak battery so if you happen to have another one that is known to be good, then swap it out and try it again to see if you get the same results. You may have a voltage regulator that's a bit on the generous side as it should drop back after the battery is fully charged. With continuous voltage of 14.6 volts, you will likely end up with boiling out some electrolyte out of your battery.

I swapped the ignition switch yesterday. Drove the car 50-60 miles this morning. The amp meter showed a steady hi charge the entire way. The only time the amp meter came back to neutral was at a slow idle.

By voltmeter, the car shows 12.4.. volts at slow idle. At 2000 or so RPM the voltage shown goes to 14.4 - 14.5. Even after the 60 or so miles, this is still what is shown.

Just put the car back in the garage after it cooled off. Checked again and at hi rpm, it went up to 14.6 volts.

No power loss, so that was good.

I had 1 wire on the ignition switch which was difficult. Not sure if I go it on the connector blade o.k. At some point in the cars life, the connector which goes onto the ignition switch has been hot as it was slightly meted. 1 wire came out of the connector and I'm not sure I got it pushed back on.

What do you think of the voltage readings?

  Thanks,

  Richard Osborne

The engine noise went away and I could tell there was now power as I was modulating the gas pedal lightly, the tach was under 1000 rpm. This lasted for about 3 or 4 seconds, then POP!!!! out the tailpipes. It was loud, I'm pretty sure the guy beside me soiled his trousers (as I almost did myself). The loud pop was the result of raw fuel in the exhaust system.

Towards the end of the slow cruise, the same thing happened, twice, where the engine lost power, but didn't shut off. After modulating the gas a few times, it would wake back up. Just no popping, but that was due to low rpm cruise and not getting the chance to fill exhaust system with raw fuel.
