The most common mistake when removing the rear brake drums of a tapered axle assembly even when using one of the correct styles of pullers is to not take the time to back off the adjustment of the brake shoes. This will put the shoes in a tremendous bind against the drum. And I concur with John Lazenby to reverse the axle nut and run it down flush to the axle end before installing the puller. In extreme cases of long term rust and /or overtorqued axle nuts, torch heat can be played on the hub during application of pressure to the puller.
