Re: [Chrysler300] That's a wheel of a different color

I would also add to Gil's comments that even the same formula of the day had variations due to mixing of batches of paint. This was certainly not a science as it is today. Example; when we first became the owners of 3N551881 a factory Tango Red example so twenty years ago I was told by someone who was considered an "authority" that the exterior color was wrong. Interestingly enough this car was a repaint, but the door jams were original as was under the trunk lid. Once I showed this to the "authority" they backed off.

The first time I saw the C300 currently owned by Bill Allen I was sure the Tango Red was entirely incorrect. In my first viewing of this car I also had mine there and the difference in color was amazing. As it turned out some years later when I assisted Bill in the purchase of that car I discovered it was correct to the original color applied when the car was born.

Regarding the steering wheel colors the plastic of the wheel will change it's color over time due to various conditions. I'm sure when originally built the goal was to come as close to the dash and other related items of the same color as possible. If we could only go back those 50 plus years and see it for ourselves.

I've restored wheels and have some that are "original". Even though the restored examples are fresh and certainly more consistent with the car I still prefer "originals" as they have a complete different look than that of a refinished one.

Rich and All: The "beige" instrument panel colors are not that
straightforward. This is what I found:

  C300: Saddle Beige, Ditzler (PPG) # 21181
  300B: Sand Dune Beige, Ditzler # 21185
300C: Desert Beige, #21281 (Also an exterior color for 1957)
  300D, 300E, and 300F: Saddle Beige, #21181

Kind of went full circle, didn't it?

I am sure there no longer exists any plastic color master for the beige
portion of the 300C steering wheel. However I think it can be assumed that
Chrysler's intent was to match the beige colored components inside the car,
and I would think the best way to do that would be to match the Desert
Beige I/P color. As has been previously mentioned, even protected NOS wheels
have shown the effects of time on the plastic color, and so cannot be
  relied on as masters.

Our '55 C-300 has a mostly black steering wheel with two short, tan/beige,
knurled sections. This color scheme matches the black and tan dash and
  the
black carpet and tan leather interior trim colors. The black all matches,
of course, and the three tans vary slightly in color.

Other '55 Chrysler models had widely varying interior colors and Chrysler
furnished widely varying two-tone colored steering wheels to match. It
appears the colors were imbedded in the vinyl (?) material of the steering
wheels. We're fortunate in that all the 300's had the same interior
  colors,
and even more so that they are classy colors that go well with a Platinum,
  Tango Red or Black car.

It might be helpful to repeat the name and paint color code for the tan
portion of the '57 dashes and have DeSoto George shoot for that color for
'57 wheels. It would be helpful to me to know the '55 tan dash color and
whether it is different than the '57.

By the way, I've just had two bat/delta wings and my rocker arm covers
refinished in 1972-74 Mercedes Benz Byzantine Gold, doctored up with some
additional yellow tint to reduce the reddish tone somewhat. They were
clear-coated with a slightly matted topcoat to reduce the wet look. They
look fabulous and "correct". Paint specs and photos available on request.

I have a NOS still in the box for my 59, it has turned almost a Harvest
  gold
color. My original after baking many years in the AZ sun still matches
  the
tan dash in the car but is full of cracks.
