Re: [Chrysler300] Timing on the 413 .................................. ..................

Hi Tom and All,
It is always good to start with the printed specs for timing assuming that all of your equipment is stock and working properly. There are many factors that can speed up or slow down combustion rates therefore the printed spec is "only" a guideline for timing and is absolutely correct only once in a while. Some things that change timing requirements (other than fuel octane) are 1) Barometric Pressure 2) Air temperature 3) Engine Operating Temperature 4) Air/Fuel ratio 5) Carbon Build-up in Combustion Chambers. ------and on, and on------
The best timing setting is not really a constant because none of the determinants is constant. The system that I use for my own vehicles is to adjust the timing advanced from spec to the point where light, occasional detonation is audible under full throttle acceleration at moderate speed. Of course if your car is noisy, has loud mufflers, have windows down, etc. and you hear detonation (pinging) then I would not consider that acceptable. Since you don't want to adjust the timing manually each time the weather changes, I recommend that you choose a cool day when the barometric pressure is high, set the timing for that extreme condition and it will work for whatever else comes your way in Miami. If you could have found a road to drive it on during Hurricane Andrew when the barometer was 28?? or so you could have used several additional degrees of advance at least for that day. Similarly when you choose to go for a mountain drive through the Rockies you can adjust it a bit.
I'm not a "numbers" man. Numbers don't mean very much so mine are never "by the book".
Hope this helps,
Marshall in Vero Beach, Fl.
