What I do on my 300G 413 is to time it by ear.  That is, drive it and
accelerate, like on a freeway entrance ramp, listen for pinging and retard
the distributor a little at a time until I get it just right.  Retard it
just enough to get rid of most or all of the pinging, but no further.

Happy Labor Day to everyone out there in 300 land!

Quick question .................... when running the 413 (with twin bbl 
carbs) on 93 octane fuel, obviously when you "step on it" you normally get 
some pinging! Assuming you continue to run the engine on today's premium (93

octane) fuel, how many degrees do you recommend advancing the timing after 
top dead center?
