John, You are absolutely correct. I forgot that the front part of the hood underside is body color (ahead of the radiator support rubber molding), as well as any reinforcements/braces. My car is an early one (#1161) by the way. C300 Chryslers had a body colored firewall and the inner fender panels, radiator core support and a "portion" of the underside of the hood was painted a black or very dark grey shade. The leading and trailing surfaces of the hood's underside were body color. This was approximately up to the reinforcement in the rear and the flap in the front. I've had people question my last statement, but have seen original cars done this way. Others claim they were all black on the bottom side. Once again I'll state that Chrysler made changes throughout the year. The 300B cars were all body color under the hood as I think all "Detroit" build Chryslers were. For 17 years we owned an exceptional original '56 New Yorker Sedan that was built in Los Angeles. That car was done in the engine compartment as the 1955 C300's were on colors. A few years ago we sold the NYer to our long time friend Mike Porto who has do a 100 point restoration on the car and it is magnificent. Looking underneath (despite the warning); the original wingnuts were open, but unfortunately I lost these when fiddling with the carbs and taking a spin without the filter. Currently run with replacement solid ones. Speaking about originality: Guess there is a difference with the B, but the hood underside of my car was positively painted flat dark grey and I have replicated that finish. Mine came with open wing nuts on the carburetor studs and acorn nuts on the cans. This made it easier to remove the entire assembly and prime the carbs before I added an electric fuel pump to do this. Don't look underneath. (Open topped vs. solid wingnuts) If all 4 were the same, were they open topped ones or solid.? If there were two different ones on each cleaner, which position on the cleaner was open topped and which one was closed (solid) topped.?
