Here in Australia a spanner with two fully closed circular ends is called a ring spanner, while one with open ends is called an open ender. Here a wrench is the sort of thing a plumber uses to undo round puipe fittings/joiners, while an adjustable opening wrench that you use on nuts and bolts is called a shifter - there is a more unpolite name which mechanics use - which goes something like a 'nut f..ker!!' I gather your wrench is our ring spanner - they come in multi point or five hex - the five hex a better grip, but need more room to get a good swing on the five sides of a nut in tight places like starters, so here one would use a bent multi hex like the postings talk about here - these are still available new in Australia - of course all now made in China - the place, not the material!! This allows you to reach around the starter to get it on the bolt head and have room to work it despite the obstructions. Generally, a box end wrench and still available in parts stores. Also, can be made from a straight wrench of the right size, using a torch to bend it round between the ends. Very useful in other applications also. Like Gil, I've had mine for near 50 years.
