I just got a reply from the seller, who said that the previous owner was
"Jim Gray" (city undisclosed), and that he paid $84K and will sell for no
less than $76K.

 

I've bought a lot of things on eBay (but never a car) and my experience is
that a desirable item often goes for much more than ordinarily expected,
exactly because two or more people desperately want the same item.  I think
eBay is a great way to expose the car to a very large audience and get that
kind of competitive bidding going.  

 

If I had way too much money, it looks like it would be a great stablemate
for my '57 300C convert (also Gaugin)

This car has been on ebay longer than I can remember. No one seems to get
close to the reserve which I suspect is around the high 70's. The car
certainly looks worth that or more but I don't think ebay is the way to sell
it. To get a decent price at any auction you need at least two people who
desperately want it at the same time.
