In any case there is a need to lubricate the cable, new or used. My recommendation for lubing one is to put a "slug" of soft multipurpose grease in a small funnel and then draw the cable through the funnel. It will pick up only a fairly small amount of that grease and it will be spread evenly over its entire length. You can wipe off some surplus and there's very little mess made in the whole process. Billlll, when you do a replacement, are you changing out just the cable, or the cable and the housing ? Maybe the routing of the housing is putting a kink in it, causing the binding, followed by the breaking. Another approach is to get one from a parts car, clean and lube, then install. That way you'll know that it's the correct length. Be sure you can spin the cable freely in the housing before installing. The cable/housing may cross-reference to a number of different Chrysler makes/years.
