Hi Rolland, if you do get a new aftermarket sending unit from NAPA or
elsewhere be aware that they sometimes will give you a reading on the temp
gauge that might differ from the original factory unit - my experience is
that they register higher on the gauge than the actual engine temp.  If you
have an A/C car they are a little more difficult to change 'cause it's under
the compressor. Usually when the sending unit fails the gauge just stays on
"C". I would recommend getting an infrared thermometer (about $70 maybe less
on sale) then you can point it at the water pump or block or thermostat
housing or whatever and found out what the real engine temp is.  If you have
air trapped in the system that can also delay the opening of the stat and
will give pretty high reading as she warms up.  Usually air will purge out
of the system if you warm it up with the cap off or drive it awhile.

Rolland, I would have suspected the power supply first but as you said if
the oil pressure and gas gage act normal the power supply is apparently
okay. My next suspicion is the temperature sender. These are easy and cheap
to replace and available as NAPA or other places. Good luck. Bob Blohm

I have a quirk in my "H" that just started after I took it out of storage
this spring.

After starting a cold engine, during warm up, the temperature gage will
move clear over to the hot area. After 4 or 5 minutes it will return to the
normal operating temperature, (just below the middle of the gage) and stay
that way until it cools off completely and is restarted. Then the cycle
repeats. I have lost no coolant and it doesn't even seem hot but my
heartrate
goes up until the needle starts toward normal.

I assumed the thermostat was sticking shut and bought a new thermostat and
gasket and replaced it. The new thermostat looked exactly like the old one
(180 degrees) which I believe I replaced last year. The temperature quirk
did not change. It still moves to the hot position, stays there for 5
minutes and then starts down.

Anyone have any experience like this? I don't believe it is the power
supply for the gages because the oil pressure gage seems to behave normally.
Could it be the gage or the sending unit?
