By the time the Pentastar was introduced in 1963, DeSoto has been out of production for a couple of model years.  It would have been a logical explanation if introduced when DeSoto was still around.  Of course, they were still in the Forward Look years then, even though the Forward Look logo wasn't emphasized toward the end of the fin era.

Always interesting to note that logos continue being used on various parts long after a new logo is introduced.  One very visible location is on the glass.  The Forward Look still appeared on the glass for some time.  The Pentastar was on the glass long after the ill-fated Daimler era began.  Notice that the Pentastar corporate symbol was dropped immediately after the Daimler takeover.  They certainly couldn't have that compete with their coveted three-pointed star.  That was one thing Cerberus did right (not much else); they brought back the Pentastar.

  My recollection is that it stood for the five different models - 
  Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler, and Imperial. But maybe that was
