That plate is what the rear window defroster blower attaches to and then the plate is mounted to (I believe the left) speaker cutout with a flexible heater duct to the defroster vent in the rear center of the package tray. I other words, there are two speaker cutouts but with the defroster option only room for one speaker. I don't know how long that method was used for the defroster but my 65 Plymouth Sport Fury, witch I ordered with the defroster option, (and 426 Wedge), had the same configuration.
