True, but you know about where #1 is, so if it's off buy about 180°, turn it over again. Something else you might (should) do is to remove #1 plug, bring the engine around to almost TDC, slide a straw thru the plug hole and then watch the straw. When it stops coming out of the head, and starts to go back, check your indicator on the damper and see if it has slipped some. Work it back and forth several times until you have it exactly at the top. The timing marks on the front of the engine should show 0, or TDC. Harmonic dampers are rubber bonded to the hub and sometimes slip around some. That can drive you nuts when you "Know" it's timed correctly and it still runs bad.
