Keith, Depending on the condition of the trunk gasket, it sounds as though you might just tweak the latch and/or the hinge adjustment a little more and you would cure the problem without changing it. Of course, a new proper gasket would have more elasticity and would really do it right. After the adjustments, how does the trunk lid close? It can get too tight and have to be slammed to close, which is not too good. Since the $1 bill works as well as the $20, it would appear that you no longer have of need of the $20. My address is...... LOL Be sure to keep us posted on the fume situation as well as any water leak. I'm sure all of us on the listserver would like to know. Especially those who offered the good suggestions. Isn't this a great service for the club? Thanks to the great people in the club. Well, isn't that interesting! I went and checked out the trunk seal just now by closing the lid with a $1 bill inserted into the seal area, and I found a gap between the lid and gasket around something like 50 percent of the whole perimeter. Heck, some of the gap was so big that I was even able to slide a $20 bill in there. I adjusted the latch about 3/16" and now just about the whole perimeter has no gap anymore - probably only about a foot or two of it remains open. So I think that lowering the passenger side front corner 1/16" and installing a brand new gasket ought to put to bed both the water leak and the fume problems with one easy solution. Thanks for helping me think this one through guys. You got me looking the right place for the problem source.
