[Chrysler300] Suggestied topic Club webpages? - Dexron vs. type F and the real issue which is that LETTER CAR transmissions are different and are high performance

Some 300 topics/questions seem to come up more than once, and any final decision/choice/help taken is solely in the domain of the person who asked the question, or raised the topic.
People like me and others take time to reply - some appreciate it, others just maybe say move on, something new please?! Whatever.

Can I suggest that topics that seem to come round pretty regular, be put on the Club Website pages somewhere, topics I think of as good ones to consider would be:
(1) Suggested best type trans Fluid for 300's Torqueflights
(ii) Petronix Installation on 300s -likely things you might encounter/fix in doing so
(iii) Why old flat cam 300s should maybe use oils that still contain zinc etc versus modern oils designed for modern (roller cam) engines that now omit that which protects flat tappet 300 cam lobes better.
(iv) Diff oils for limited slip type 300 rear ends
(v) Current Radial tire sizes (in inches overall height) versus old original cross ply 300 issue tire sizes
(vi) sample rear brake drum pullers to use on early rear taper axle 300s

Then when a Member comes up with a query that involves a topic already on the Club Website, then it only takes one simple post/reply, to point the questioner to a first possible answer. And I think that thought has already started re some topics, such as disc brakes for 300s?!

Who contributes to what put on the Club Site re any topic I leave to others, but for example the excellent advice/comment offered by George Rhiel on the email posted below would be an excellent start re Trans fluid topic, especially if a footnote added, that the main possible problem with using (early) Dexrons, is the clutches in the (300) trans can slip too long/much on hard shifts, causing the friction material on the plates to wear off prematurely, then the resultant 'metal to metal' clutch faces cause trans to fail and need a rebuild.

Petronix has recently been covered very excellently, and there should be one or two good replies/posts, that could be used 100% as is, if the writers agree. Same with tire size topic, etc , etc??

And if anyone in the future feels they need know a more definitive answer on another possible topic, 'ethanol fuels in 300s, the pros and cons??! - especially re possible harmful higher combustion temperatures' - would be great help to me, if no one else??

Leave it with you - and rather than turn this into another 2-20 day site topic, how about if someone wants to volunteer to submit/organise suitable copy/detail to 'whomever' those 'better in the know' thinks could help set something up, if it felt not too hard to do? But that just an opinion.

Subject: [Chrysler300] Dexron vs. type F and the real issue which is that LETTER CAR transmissions are different and are high performance

Greetings-

Yes, this subject is getting tired, but instead of deleting or moaning you
may actually want to read this as this relates to letter cars which, after
all, is the real reason for the listserver, and it wasn't clear to me that
the latest thread actually ever got focused on letter cars.

I am no transmission expert, but George Riehl is (or was) and he wrote an
excellent article for the NewsFlite about 10 or 15 years ago on letter car
transmissions.

For those newer to the club, here is what George had to say about letter car
transmissions:

1) "There were many internal differences for the 300 (letter car)
transmissions and it gets very involved. Front and rear clutch packs have
more friction discs. Front cushion spring is eliminated, kick down lever is
of a different ratio, rear clutch spring is different, accumulator spring is
eliminated, line pressures are higher, clutch pack clearances are closer,
band adjustments are tighter and governor weights and springs are
different."

2) "The fluid to use in these transmissions (letter cars) is type F or
FA. I prefer type F when available. Type "A" suffix "A" should not be used
and is fortunately not readily available. Do not use Mercon or Dexron, as
they will result in early transmission failure. Chrysler put out a special
tech bulletin to technicians to use Type F, even in the A833 4-speed
transmissions."

It would be interesting if someone could dig up that tech bulletin and see
exactly when it was issued and to what transmissions it applies to.

Of note, after Dexron was introduced Chrysler began using it as the factory
transmission fill for both TorqueFlite and the A-833 4-speed. From the 1975
chassis service manual, page 0-27: "Use only fluids of the type labeled
DEXRON Automatic Transmission Fluid such as MOPAR DEXRON Automatic
Transmission Fluid, Part Number 3549660, or equivalent."

Of course, this was long after letter cars and their modified high
performance transmissions. I assume, therefore, the real need for type F is
both for firm shifts and the so the modified higher performance letter car
transmissions do not fail prematurely.
