Well, I have heard of vintage and exotic car dealers, but I have never dealt with any and probably never will.  It seems to me that most of these type of dealers, with possibly rare exceptions, are merely consignment houses that receive cars from private parties or restoration shops, make them look pretty, do whatever little service work may be necessary to maintain the prettiness and make sure the car runs well enough to make the taillights disappear from the showroom, and negotiate top dollar from the customers to satisfy the sellers.  These dealers are dependent upon the third party sellers claims, whether honest or dishonest, as to the condition of the vehicles and pass that information onto the buyers.  And I imagine that the cars are sold AS-IS with no warranty, expressed or implied.  It is quite possible that a seller can make false claims to the dealer, who, without verification, pass on those false claims, without intention or malice, then the buyer becomes disappointed when they discover after the sale that the claims were false.
 
Case in point.  Suppose a third party seller consigns with one of these dealers to sell their 1964 Chrysler.  Since they know the engine block and transmission case were the ones originally assembled into the car, the seller claims it's a "Numbers Matching" car.  Note, "Numbers Matching" is defined as a car with the VIN from the VIN plate stamped onto the engine block and transmission case at the factory and the VIN numbers in all three places match.  Now, with the sellers claim, the dealer will advertise this particular 1964 Chrysler as a "Numbers Matching" car, something I have seen frequently and pertaining to 1964 Chryslers.  I know for a fact that Chrysler didn't start this "Numbers Matching" practice until at least 1968.  I also know, after owning several 1964 Chryslers for up to 35 years, that the only place the VIN appears in on the VIN plate and nowhere else.  So every time I see a dealer advertising a "Numbers Matching" 1964 Chrysler, I both cringe and laugh.  Why?  Because there are no numbers to match.
 
Whenever dealing with such a dealer, it is imperative for the buyer to do proper due diligence.  Without it, the buyer can be set up for severe disappointment.  I'm not trying to criticize or point fingers, as I am just trying to share my "two cents" of knowledge and opinion for what it's worth.  Please accept my comments in the spirit they are given.

When you say "dealer" are you refering to a modern Chrysler dealership or just a generic indepentdent repair shop?
