Hi All, I have been reading the past emails regarding gearbox rebuilding and it seems that the standard rebuild (not firm) is the best for most drivers. I am going to buy a used gearbox, have it shipped out, and then replace the one in my 300. How does one determine that excessive play in the steering is the gearbox? Is there a check list that I should go through first, just to make sure the gearbox rebuilding is needed? I realize the gearbox is 50 years old and has never been touched. The centerlink and ball joints have been replaced. I have tried to clean up the sloppy play by tightning the screw on the gearbox, but it did not seem to have my effect. I think there was some caution statement in the service manual to not tighten this screw too much. Any idea what is the right amount? I also see a bit of fluid around the screw, so maybe there is a slight leak? I assume this is not normal. 300ly, Mark Lindahl '63 300 Conv.
