Re: [Chrysler300] 300F torque converter and remote booster

i for one will be looking forward to it. Which leads me to ask one final question because i know this is not meant to be a course in automotive technology but why do you even need a torque converter -why could you not just bolt the crankshaft to  a drive in the trans to run the pumps? If the vanes speed varies with engine speed and presumably also varies the pressure to the trans , why do you need fluid to run the trans instead of a direct drive. The engine in my farm tractor runs the hydraulic system with a gear drive-why not run a car the same way. Sorry, but inquiring minds want to know. Maybe somebody else has also had the same question.

Hi Rich and Group,
The 62 and up torque converters and the cast iron TF converters are two different animals. You can by rebuilt converters for the 62 and up just about anywhere. The early ones require completely different tooling to rebuild. I think that Chrysler Corp was the only manufacturer to have a converter designed this way. The later units use a flex plate that is bolted to the crank shaft, and the converter is bolted to this with 4 bolts. The front hub is also what drives the front pump in the trans and rides in a bushing in the pump. The early unit has a small bolt circle with studs that go through a flange on the crankshaft, and are secured with nuts. Something like 8 or so. The other end has a very short seal surface that only seals the converter hub. A drive sleeve connects the converter to the front pump and has an O-ring on the converter side, and a steel ring on the pump side. Lots more places to leak, and also one of the causes for the drain back from the converter if they don’t seal fully. I will try and put together a picture article for the next E-News, as it’s kind of hard to explain in writing.

The shop that overhauled the TorqueFlite in our 1964 Chrysler 300K had its
torque converter rebuilt at the shop listed below. I don’t have many miles
on it yet, but they may be a valid source for left-coasters and others. The
large independent tranny shop that rebuilt my Torky seems to like and trust
Saxco and that’s about all I have on them.

The TCI video and others from TCI was helpful. A lockup TC might help the
MPG’s! It’s rather hard to understand how a TC fails unless the little
vanes break or junk from elsewhere in the tranny gets to its precision seals
and surfaces. Of course, high-speed kickdowns and smoky burnouts can be
hard on every moving part in the drivetrain.

BTW, Power Brake Exchange in San Jose re-rebuilt the remote booster from our
300K in about an hour today. It will go back into the LF wheel well
tomorrow and hopefully hold a high and hard pedal. Pictures of the booster
are available for the curious.

With all the problems going on in the world today, I am glad to see the
flames out on our little dialog.

Hi group,

Here is a link to TCI, a company that reconditions torque converters.
The video shows a step-by-step procedure that they use. It's informative and
the illustration quality is good.
