5 on 4.5 in is 114.3 mm at least that is what was stamped on BBS wheels that were 4.5 in - but your point is well taken. And, I could not agree with you more as to the importance of the correct offset. Most current wheels have a lot of inside offset compared to the pre-front-wheel-drive cars of the 60's and 70's. If you try to put the newer wheels on without compensating or at least verifying you have clearance, you can have big problems - from rubbing tires at steering extremes and blowing out a tire to the inside of a wheel damaging a stock brake line to just messing up the alignment.
