I remember when I had my '64 New Yorker Salon with
the wider wheels as Rich mentioned. It was the car I drove back and forth
to college (3 hours each way) in the early 70's. I never had a problem
with losing the hubcaps until I switched from bias tires to radial tires, then I
was always losing hubcaps, usually when I was turning, especially going down an
entrance/exit ramp on or off of the interstate. If I had the window down
driving slowly in the city, I was always aware of a "squeak-squeak" coming from
the hubcaps, especially rolling up to a traffic light or stop sign. I was
told by a guy in the tire shop that radial tires put more stress on the wheels
which caused them to flex more, in turn working the hubcaps off the wheel.
Don't know if that was the correct explanation or not but it made sense to me
and my situation at the time.
