I'm going to second the motion on equalizer hitches. They will improve road handling far more than anything else you might do to get the proper balance and tongue weight. It's really an unbelievable difference from just having a regular ball hitch setup.

And I would also echo the HD axles recommendations. My 24' Pace American weighs 3500 pounds when it's empty, so I'm at 4000 pounds per axle dead weight as soon as I roll my C on it. 5000# ratings per axle sound like a good place to start.
