[Chrysler300] Whither the hyphen

Somewhere, Victor Borge is getting a great laugh as we debate the hyphen.  View and listen to this in order to learn how to properly insert a “dash” (whissshhttt) in your next conversation about the letter cars—if you are so inclined.  He gives no verbal equivalent to the slash (fft)

Speaking of the 300K’s, the only place I find the letter K on the car is on the ram engine block.  There, it is hyphenless on the top line “C300K” and has hyphens on the bottom line “11-14-63”. Ditto for the 300J’s.  There is NO C in front of the “300’s” on our ’55 wheel covers, hood emblem, trunk medallion or rear quarters—just “300”.  300B’s through 300H’s do have the appropriate letter hither and thither.  I especially like the little E on the ‘59 hood and the little “H” on the ’62 trunk lid.

Chrysler was consistently inconsistent.  We could put it to a vote and adopt a consistent print style.  I’m for inserting it in all of our text as the number 300 followed by any letter forms a rather nice compound phrase that rolls off the tongue and is indelibly engraved on the psyches of car people around the world.

1999-2004 300M’s have the little letter “m” on their flanks as does Larry Jett’s 1966 300 (Retrofitted by a puckish Jett.  Well, that’s what it would have been).  The hemi-engined 2005-2014 300’s sport the letter C for no good reason—with no (whissshhttt)

And then, as Juliet once said, “What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”  Our letter cars, hyphenated or not, would still be Beautiful Brutes!

Now this is a very interesting question.  Here is what I discovered.

My 1964 dealer showroom Facts Book and Trim Selector designates the letter car as "300K".  However, the sales brochures and magazine advertisement copy designates the letter car as "300-K".

In my humble opinion, I believe that either way is correct.  My "two cents" for what its worth.

Hi To All:

Do letter car designations have hyphens?

See Gloria Moon's remarks:

"It is NOT a 300-C or a 300-D.
It is
300C or 300D.

I tried correcting it on the D section, but there it is again. I have never seen it with the hyphen except for this. I didn't check but have to presume all the letter years also have a hyphen.

Now for a rousing round of conversation, put that on the listserver if you dare!
G"
