I think these are most often damaged by hanging the unsupported pipe off them, unsupported as mentioned earlier, and then happily working on exhaust system front to back. ..then pipe acts as a big torque wrench putting high forces on bolts and flanges. 3” apart bolts say, 4 foot long pipe is 16 to one, pull it with 100lbs into place putting on hanger, puts 1600 lbs on flange bolt . Cast iron really weak in tension..If you think about net loading at flange once pipe and muffler hung properly (hanger behind mufflers) there is not much prying going on at flange at all.
Probably they had trouble at factory with a few animal workers breaking them? I imagine exhaust is hooked up with impact wrench after the ram engine and manifold are dropped in car ..a recipe for breaking them, if pipes not straight. . I only venture into this minefield , as care in installing the pipes is probably more significant than the pan brackets ; and if Rear hanger rubber fails or , muffler fell down (rust) a broken manifold flange is not far away. So concern about the rear hangers being AAA++ is probably very valid…
AKA, Diesel 300D Mercedes syndrome ; other way round..one hanger way in back, front held by manifold, clip to driveline …to let it shake, as it does. = front of muffler rots out first (by design?) and front falls down, front of muffler catches on road roughness, wraps pipe to rear around back axle while inducing a mini pole vault. “The best pole vault or nothing” .
I’ll take nothing. I drilled hole in floor made loop of coat hanger wire on pipe behind muffler . Also helps let the water out of floor pans .

Dave:
Thanks for your post. I stand corrected. Good point about the brackets that support the exhaust manifolds on the J’s & K’s. Properly installed, they take some of the stress from the connections to the block. In the 1964 Parts catalog: Page 9-25 (Picture) and 9-45 (Description) for Items 9-48-77 and 9-48-86—Brackets and spacers. If spacers are lost, flat washers should work just fine.

Regarding the J-K header supports.
There are 2 support plates mounted to 2 of the oil pan bolts on either side.
Longer bolts and flat washers needed to clear the flange on the oil pan.
They extend out and upwards somewhat and have 2 slight bends in each to compensate for the higher location of the mounting boss in/on the lower/main header pipe.

Ironic the last 3 digits, huh, “426”

The 1964 Parts and Service manuals don’t seem to show any supports for the exhaust system other than at the muffler’s outlets and at the end of the tailpipe. Apparently, the supports at the rear of the mufflers are attached to brackets fastened to the bottom of the floor pan. If additional supports are common, are there any details on best practice and location? Supports similar to those at the rear of the mufflers could be added to reinforce and support the joints at the muffler inlets. Provision for thermal growth and engine oscillations and vibrations would be required.
1959-1962 ram-engine exhaust and header pipes had varying degrees of support between the exhaust manifolds and the muffler inlets. It would appear that Chrysler engineers felt that the big cast-iron exhaust headers on the J & K engines would adequately support the front end of the exhaust system. A glance at the ’70 hemi exhaust system shows the first support is also at the mufflers’ outlets.
That said, I’m having to deal with a ram-K exhaust header with one of the four bolt holes torn out. There was not that much “meat” around the bolt holes. No telling how it was damaged but it looks like an installation or removal error.

Dave, 300 List
The long exhaust manifolds for the Short long ram, require support to hold up the exhaust pipe. If installing the pipe without proper support, the four bolt flange at the connection can break, from what I've heard somewhat easily. Can anyone send a picture of these supports for the exhaust / tailpipe "Installed", and possibly a dimensioned sketch, with mounting points. Any assistance is Greatly appreciated! I think this question fits in this "64 Tailpipe brackets" string, Thanks again!

Thanks for all the support on the K tail pipe hangers.
I found them as B body, the rubber straps need to measure up to your pipe.

And this is the last I'll say about them.
