Hi, Harry:

Again, not much help on the AutoPilot, but have some questions about the fan noise to get us thinking. The Service Diagnosis on Pages 1-22 & 1-23 doesn’t speak to noise—just malfunction and adjustments.

As the noise may be strictly mechanical (two speedometer cables, internal gearing and sensors—or purely electrical- (hard to imagine this)—or a combination. Presumably, there is a rotating disc in the unit and a speed sensor reading the RPM of the disc. The speedo-cable RPM may be geared up or down within the control unit for best performance. The manual says the bearings are sealed for the service life of the unit. Isn’t that good to know?

Can you hear the noise with the engine running?
If engine is running, can you hear the noise when stopped, in motion or both?
Does the pitch of the noise change with engine speed when in Park or Neutral?
Does the pitch of the noise change with engine speed when in drive and in motion?
Does turning off the AutoPilot switch at the dash eliminate the noise?
What did your mechanic disconnect? Wires or cables?
Does your speedometer and/or odometer operate with the AutoPilot disconnected?
Did your AutoPilot ever work right?

There are about 5 pages of information on this subject. Worth looking at. A noise would possibly be the cable end not fitting up to snuff and reinserting this component is about the only thing that moves in the system. This does not address this problem but gives a good overview of the system. John...
